| Monastir, a peninsular, a seaside tourist resort in the East of Tunisia built on a promontory , lies 165 km to South-West of Tunis, near Sousse. Its geography is open on the sea which played in the past an important role in its relations with the Mediterranean World. . A cradle of very ancient civilizations (Prephoenician, Roman Punic and Arabo-muslim) Monastir has completely changed through more than 3000 of history.: |

| Monastir, the administrative centre of the governorate and a university centre, lives today mainly of tourism which is related to a rich heritage. The City has many monuments, especially its imposing ribat, several ancient mosques, Bourguiba’s Mosque, built in 1963, has an architecture faithful to the inherited traditions ; and a few kilometres from the Medina, the remains of the ancient city Ruspina. |
